To protect the original meat from imitations

The German Farmers 'Association (DBV), the German Butchers' Association (DFV) and the Association of the Meat Industry (VDF) support the initiative from the European Parliament for EU-wide protection of names for meat and meat products comparable to the protection for milk and milk products. The proposal for a regulation for the common organization of the market was drawn up under the leadership of MEP Eric Andrieu and concerns in particular the “steak”, the “schnitzel” and the “burger”.

In a joint letter from the associations to Federal Food Minister Julia Klöckner, it says: “As a producer and processor of meat, we vouch for the authenticity of our products. At the same time, we are committed to the principle of truth and clarity in labeling. Therefore, from our point of view, it is unacceptable if meat-free foods are named with names that are commonly used for meat and meat products. From the point of view of the associations, a national regulation in the guiding principles of the food book reaches its limits in many cases. Thanks to the initiative of the European Parliament, there is now an opportunity to bring about EU-wide protection of designations and thus legal security for manufacturers in the entire internal market.
