BSE test costs reduced

Meck-Pomm's Minister of Agriculture Dr. Till Backhaus: Consumer protection has top priority

The costs for BSE tests in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be reduced retrospectively from June 1, 2004. "For the second time this year, we can pass on the savings from lower costs when purchasing the test kits and the improved examination efficiency directly to economic stakeholders such as farmers and slaughterhouses," says Minister of Agriculture Dr. Till Backhaus (SPD). The reduction in fees will also improve the competitiveness of slaughterhouses in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. However, consumer protection, i.e. safe and highly reliable results when carrying out the tests, continues to enjoy absolute priority, says Backhaus.

The state veterinary and food inspection office is responsible for the tests as the state inspection body. In Germany, BSE tests are carried out on all cattle older than 24 months. Up to June 20, 2004, 45.520 cattle in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were examined for the disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). So far this year there have been two cases of BSE in cattle. Before that, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had been BSE-free for 15 months. Last year, 102.925 so-called rapid tests were carried out on slaughter cattle.
