EU-wide losses in poultry meat

In Germany, however, another increase in production

In relation to the EU as a whole, poultry meat recently had to endure a “dry spell”: after years of continuous growth, slight declines in production were already recorded in 2002. In 2003 poultry meat production in the EU even plummeted; According to estimates available to date based on national data, there is a decrease of almost six percent to 8,82 million tons.

The 2003 losses were greatest in the Netherlands; Against the background of last year's avian plague wave, poultry meat production has so far been reduced by a good 25 percent. However, significant reductions have also been reported from other important production countries - for example France and Italy. In Spain, the production curve is also pointing down again after a previous sharp increase. However, there are doubts about the reliability of the Spanish statistics. As the only well-known producer country, Germany again recorded an increase in poultry meat production, namely by three percent to 1,07 million tons.

Current ZMP market trends

Livestock and Meat

The demand for beef at the German wholesale markets was described in the Holy Week as partly calm and partly steady. As before, precious parts were in the foreground of interest; Fore quarters were often neglected. The not too extensive supply of slaughter cattle was sufficient for the more restrained demand from the slaughterhouses. The buyers tried to lower the prices for male animals again, but this only succeeded regionally. Cows for slaughter were only available in limited numbers at the beginning of the new dairy year. The slaughterhouses mostly paid unchanged prices. According to a preliminary overview, the weighted federal average for cows in meat trade class O3 stagnated at 1,79 euros per kilogram of slaughter weight. Young bulls of class R3 brought in at 2,49 euros per kilogram one cent less than in the previous week. The dispatch of beef to neighboring countries was mostly continuous. - In the coming week, beef demand is likely to be quieter than before and concentrate on cheaper items. Young bulls and cows for slaughter are expected to be traded at prices that are barely maintained or unchanged. - Veal was mostly quickly in demand before Easter. The supply of slaughter calves was good enough for the needs, the prices tended by and large to be stable. Calves for slaughter that were billed at a flat rate continued to generate around EUR 4,68 per kilogram of slaughter weight. - Holstein bull calves continued to be assessed. In the coming week, however, stable rates can at best be expected, as the supply is increasing, while the fatteners' willingness to stablish could be a little more restrained.

Württemberger Lamm - "From the landscape to the consumer"

Conference on "Sustainable Lamb Meat Production"

The “Württemberger Lamm” program has now been successfully used in practice for a year thanks to attributes such as tradition, quality, diversity and origin. "Württemberger Lamm" is the protected brand of the Baden-Württembergische Lammfleischerzeugergemeinschaft eV and has been offered by Viehzentrale Südwest GmbH, Stuttgart, and Frischlamm GmbH, Stuttgart, as marketing partners throughout Baden-Württemberg since April 2003. Swiss BSE test on the road to success in the USA

Prionics AG will in future also sell its products in the United States

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has granted marketing authorization for the Prionics (R) -Check WESTERN and Prionics (R) -Check LIA rapid BSE tests. This means that Prionics AG receives US approval for its prion tests almost at the same time as its US competitors.

"This is really an extraordinary success for us as a Swiss company," explains Dr. Markus Moser, CEO of Prionics AG. "The hurdles were indeed very high, as the US authorities set strict criteria for the import of biotechnologically manufactured products and therefore had to inspect the production facilities on site." The fact that Prionics was able to keep up with its American competitors despite these high requirements means that the USA attaches great importance to the Prionics (R) -Check BSE test procedure. Prionics AG is also the only company in the world that offers several approved BSE rapid tests. "This enables us to respond specifically to the needs of our customers for flexible solutions," explains Marketing Director Ernst Zollinger.

BKK study: sick leave also declined in 2004

The professional situation influences the occurrence of the illness

The sickness rate of those insured by the BKK continued to decrease in 2003 and fell from 3,9 to 3,8 percent in the previous year. The downward trend is also confirmed in the sample results for this year. The sickness-related failure rates were extremely low in the first two months of 2004 as well. The previous year's figures, which were already low, were undercut by around half a percentage point (January 2004: 3,7 percent, January 2003: 4,3 percent; February 2004: 4,0 percent, February 2003: 4,8 percent).

In recent years, the sickness rate of those insured by the BKK has decreased continuously by 0,1 percentage points: The annual average sickness rate was 2002 percent in 3,9, 2001 percent in 4,0 and 2000 percent in 4,1.

There are signs of an increase in the age limit for BSE tests

As reported by the Association of the Meat Industry, the European Commission is thinking out loud about raising the mandatory test age for BSE tests in cattle in the normal slaughter process from 30 to 36 months as soon as possible. In the run-up to a specific proposal for a regulation, an informal examination is currently being carried out to determine whether there could be a majority in the member states. The overwhelming number of Member States are apparently still reluctant to raise the mandatory test age at the present time. If there is no clear majority in favor of the Commission proposal, the Commission is likely to have a further risk analysis carried out on this issue, which will then serve as the basis for the intended amendment to the BSE regulation at the end of the year. In Brussels, it is expected that the test age will be raised to 2005 months by spring 36 at the latest.

In its decision on the national mandatory test age, the Federal Government is based on a statement by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment dated December 22, 2003. It states:

Eating disorders are serious mental and physical illnesses

New book provides information on all eating disorders for the first time

Eating disorders are serious mental and physical illnesses. They often last a lifetime and cause massive damage to the body, the psyche and interpersonal relationships. More and more people affected - mainly girls and young women, but also young men - and their relatives are looking for help because of this. The transition from disturbed eating behavior to pathological disorder is often gradual and is not immediately noticed by many affected persons and relatives. In the new book, "Eating Disorders. Anorexia. Bulimia. Binge Eating." the authors go into all eating disorders for the first time. Co-author, private lecturer Dipl. Psych. Dr. phil. Günter Reich (head of the outpatient clinic for family therapy and eating disorders in the field of human medicine at the University of Göttingen) says: "We wanted to offer a comprehensive overview of eating disorders in a book and describe the disorders and their treatment, using case studies in particular." The book was published by TRIAS Verlag Stuttgart in 2003 and costs 17,95 euros.

Ingestion of food is closely related to a wide variety of emotional states. Tension can "hit someone's stomach", "bacon" is added and still others fight boredom with food. For most people, once their problems are resolved, their eating habits go away. But there are a large number of people who develop it into illness. The causes of an eating disorder are many and varied from person to person, as are the treatment approaches. The authors illustrate this using case studies.
