Genetic engineering labeling is coming!

aid flyer informed

From April 18, the new labeling rules for genetically modified foods will apply.
The aim of this labeling regulation, which is one of the strictest in the world, is information and thus freedom of choice for consumers. They should know: Genetic engineering was used here. With the help of this information, one can make a conscious decision for or against genetically modified products and thus vote with the shopping basket.

In the long term, retailers will only offer consumers the products that they ask for in stores. At the moment, however, it seems extremely questionable whether you will actually find labeled products on the shelves in April, because the manufacturers are making great efforts to get hold of GMO-free raw materials. But the new regulation has its limits: Meat, milk and eggs from animals that have been fed with feed from genetically modified organisms, for example, do not have to be labeled. It is still unclear whether, for example, vitamins and other additives that are produced with the help of genetically modified microorganisms have to be labelled. You can find the new labeling in compact form in our genetic engineering flyer, which you can download free of charge from the Internet at www.aid.de. You can also order the flyer in larger quantities at:

No increased risk of cancer from acrylamide

Apparently, zealous consumer protection advocates had no reason to worry consumers about the cancer risk from acrylamide in baked goods, because epidemiological studies have so far not shown any increased cancer risk, as was the case at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society (227th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society) in Annaheim by various scientists have been reported.

Lorelei Mucci from the School of Public Health at Harvard University in Boston reported on four case-control studies at the conference. In it, she examined whether the high consumption of acrylamide is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, kidney cancer or colorectal carcinoma. The scientist found no evidence of this.

New Zealand researchers discover new way to prevent migraines and strokes

Scientists at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) in New Zealand, in collaboration with researchers at Australia's Griffith University, have found that a gene linked to an increased risk of stroke is also linked to one of the most severe forms of headache, migraine with aura. connected. A simple dietary supplement could now both provide relief for many migraine sufferers and be used to prevent strokes.

Migraines are a common condition that affects women more than men. About a quarter of those affected suffer from the most severe form of the disease, migraine with aura. It is associated with neurological disorders such as blurred vision and abnormal sensations in the head area, often followed by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound and of course headache.

Securing trust with DLG awards

In increasingly fiercely competitive markets, it is important to win a competition to convince public opinion. The Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft (DLG) offers manufacturers from the convenience sector an excellent communication tool for this: the TOP TEN ranking lists for the frozen food, ready meals and delicatessen sectors, which are highly regarded by experts and are published every year. These hit lists are based on the quality achievements achieved in the DLG convenience competition. Companies can register their products for the international DLG quality competition 4 until June 2004th!

With the TOP TEN ranking lists, manufacturers receive an excellent instrument for credible corporate communication in addition to the DLG medals. Because commitments to in-house quality must be documented today. To do this, they need trust-enhancing instruments and evidence from competent and neutral specialist organizations such as the DLG. Both the DLG awards and the ranking attract a great deal of attention from retailers and consumers, because they are always companies with a distinctive quality profile. And credibly documented quality is today the best confidence booster.

Matthias Hintersteininger from Austria is the winner of this year's international competition for young butchers. Christian Steinlein from Germany follows in second place, Brund Rickli from Switzerland takes third place. Together, the two Austrians achieved the highest number of points in the team classification and thus victory for the Austrian team. The International Young Butchers Competition, an annual event of the International Master Butchers Association (IMV), was held this year in the modern and spacious premises of the Vejle Vocational School in Denmark. Many interested spectators and the strongly represented media were able to follow the performance comparison live.

Partner group of the butcher trade with a special service at the IFFA 2004

Visitor guidance system facilitates contact between trade fair visitors from the butcher trade and exhibitors

Three years ago - during the IFFA 2001 - the partner group of the butcher trade was founded. Its members actively support the f-brand concept of the butcher trade and thus promote the butcher shops. 42 companies from mechanical engineering, the supplier industry, the service industry and the media sector are currently involved in this exclusive group. Recently, Gewürzmüller GmbH, Tipper Tiealpina GmbH, Hela Gewürzwerk Hermann Laue GmbH & Co. KG and Axel Springer Verlag with the Bild newspaper have joined.

The members of the partner group provide financial resources that flow into various support and advertising projects in the butcher trade. In addition, individual projects with certain partners are also possible, some of which have already been carried out. This includes recruiting young talents as well as seminars and training courses or, for example, the realization of the successful Pixi book "I have a friend who is a master butcher".

Easter shopping sometimes a bit more expensive than in 2003

ZMP consumer preview for the month of April

he purchases for the upcoming Easter days will be somewhat more expensive for German consumers than in the previous year. Expenses for eggs, new potatoes, veal and turkey meat are expected to be higher. But the lamb is cheaper than in 2003. Meat mostly as cheap as last year - lamb cheaper

Fine cuts of beef and lamb will be at the top of consumers' shopping lists before Easter, but the livelier demand is unlikely to lead to drastic price increases. If there is a sufficient supply, prices for beef can usually be expected to be similar to the previous year. Veal remains somewhat more expensive than in 2003 due to the limited supply of slaughtered calves. Sufficient supply is also expected at the lamb market, because the local sheep farmers base their lamb production on this date. At the same time, the local market will likely be supplied from abroad to a greater extent than in the previous year. The lamb prices on the store step, which already fell significantly at the end of last year, should therefore remain at their consumer-friendly level and continue to be significantly lower than in the spring of last year. Consumer prices for pork are also unlikely to deviate much from the previous year.

Cattle weighed more in 2003

Calves and pigs also delivered more heavily

In Germany in 2003 the number of commercially slaughtered cattle fell by 7,6 percent to a good 3,62 million heads, according to official information. With a decrease of 7,2 percent to 1,18 million tons, the amount of meat slaughtered did not decrease quite as significantly - a consequence of the slightly increased slaughter weights: The animals delivered last year weighed an average of 326,9 kilograms. That was 1,5 kilograms more than before, but 4,4 kilograms per beef less than two years ago. This means that the slaughter weights have returned to their usual level after the sharp rise in the BSE year 2001.

The number of calves slaughtered in Germany in 2003 was 337.900, 3,3 percent lower than in the previous year. However, the amount slaughtered “only” fell by 1,9 percent to 40.300 tons, as the producers had also fattened their calves a little more. On average, they weighed 119,9 kilograms, also 1,5 kilograms more than in 2002.
