PETA does not end campaign "Holocaust on your plate"

The injunction only applies to pictures in the exhibition

As the international animal rights organization PETA announced today in Stuttgart, it will not stop your controversial campaign “The Holocaust on your plate”. In an interim injunction from the Berlin Regional Court on March 18, the organization was merely forbidden to distribute 7 of the 8 posters of the exhibition "... via the Internet and / or in the form of an exhibition open to the public and / or to have them distributed / or to make it accessible to the public in any other way. "

PETA's self-image is based on applying the lessons from the Holocaust to all victims of oppression, discrimination, prejudice and intolerance. For all those, no matter how or whether we understand them, who are hurt, scared and killed by those in power. The message of the campaign is to move people to take responsibility towards animals. “Life is of inestimable value for animals too. They feel love, joy, pain and fear just like we do ”, says Harald Ullmann, 2nd chairman of PETA-Germany eV

At SPAR, concentration on core business is entering the last phase

Replacement of hypermarket branches creates basis for earnings turnaround

The restructuring of SPAR Handels-Aktiengesellschaft is making significant progress: since 2002, the company has sold 287 of the 389 EUROSPAR and INTERMARCHÉ hypermarket branches. Up to and including March 2004, SPAR Handels-Aktiengesellschaft handed over 43 stores to independent SPAR retailers, liquidated 116 stores and closed 128 stores. By July 102, solutions will be found for the remaining 2004 markets. It is currently planned to privatize at least 40 more stores. "This will complete the organizational restructuring with the focus on SPAR wholesale and NETTO food discount trade," emphasizes Dr. Fritz Ammann, CEO of SPAR Handels-Aktiengesellschaft. "At the same time, the prerequisites will be in place to achieve sustained positive operating results from 2005 onwards." Consistently end a loss-making commitment

The supermarkets had prevented the turnaround in earnings in recent years and in 2002 alone burdened the operating result of SPAR Handels-Aktiengesellschaft with EUR –162,3 million. This corresponds to around 106 percent of the Group's operating losses. In the first half of 2003, the operating loss of the hypermarket branches was €66,7 million. He thus had a share of around 104 percent of the total operating loss.

EU decides better protection for dolphins

On March 22, 2004, the Council of Ministers decided to better protect dolphins and porpoises in EU waters. The measures proposed by the European Commission in July 2003 concern the gradual cessation of driftnet fishing from January 1, 2005 up to a complete ban on January 1, 2008, the compulsory use of acoustic signaling devices ("pingers") on the Nets and monitoring of by-catches by observers. "This decision will better protect dolphins and porpoises from perishing in the nets. Not only will dolphins be better protected. The measures are also in the interests of biodiversity Fishermen do not want to catch these animals ", explained Franz Fischler, member of the commission responsible for agriculture, rural development and fisheries.

The scientific advice shows that most of the fishing gear used in Europe leads to the inadvertent capture of certain small cetaceans (dolphins and porpoises). Obviously, the biggest problem is with gillnets and pelagic trawls.

CDU: Federal government should take responsibility for overeating of children

Obesity in children and adolescents is a serious problem

"Action is Satisfaction" used to be a spontaneous saying. Just 9 months after Renate Künast started a campaign on the subject, Ursula Heinen and Julia Klöckner from the Union parliamentary group are demanding clarification about whether the government is aware of the "fat child problem" and what is doing about it. Enough blasphemy, here is the original text of the press release:

On the occasion of the small question from the CDU / CSU parliamentary group on the subject of "Child and Adolescent Health", the consumer protection commissioner of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Ursula Heinen MdB, and the responsible rapporteur in the committee for consumer protection, food and agriculture, Julia Klöckner MdB:

The livestock market in April

Piglet prices slightly declining

The unexpected soaring prices for slaughter pigs in February and March led to a constant willingness of the pig farmers to set up stables. With limited supply at the same time, the piglet prices could be fixed from week to week and should be approximately at the previous year's level in March on average. In April, however, the rise in piglet quotations will probably come to an end, since the expected proceeds for animals that are housed in April will be noticeably lower when they are ready for slaughter in October.

QS scheme more attractive than IKB?

Some supermarkets in Holland no longer want to market meat from the Dutch quality assurance system IKB pigs and instead switch to meat from the German QS scheme. This was recently announced by a representative of the Dutch food retail association CBL at a meeting of the Product Board for Livestock and Meat PVV, which controls the IKB pig system. The CBL representative did not want to reveal the names of the supermarkets in question, as reported by the Dutch trade press. The PVV chairman confirmed that some supermarkets had already contacted the Product Board with questions about the QS scheme and were planning to switch to the QS scheme.

An important reason for the possible switch is the dispute that has been smoldering for months between the PVV and the Dutch association of pig farmers NVV, who developed the IKB-2004 system, which competes with the previous IKB pig system. While IKB-Pigs is a cross-chain system, IKB-2004 mainly contains quality criteria for the producer level. According to PVV information, around 85 percent of Dutch pig farmers have now registered with the IKB pig system with a similar share of total production. Another point of criticism from the supermarkets is the involvement of several "stage commissions" in the development of IKB pig quality criteria. Each commission represents a stage in the marketing chain, which does not promote the transparency and consistency of the system.

Current ZMP market trends

Livestock and Meat

In the meat wholesale markets, the demand for beef did not pick up significantly in the third week of March. Judging by the sales opportunities, young bulls were sufficiently available. The prices were just about able to hold their ground. On average across Germany, young bulls in the meat trading class R3 brought in 2,54 euros per kilogram slaughter weight, which is 19 cents less than a year ago. The supply of cows for slaughter, on the other hand, was still limited and the slaughterhouses had to adjust their payout prices upwards again by two to three cents. According to a preliminary overview, the federal funds for class O3 cows increased by two cents to EUR 1,75 per kilogram, which would be six cents less than in the previous year. Due to the mostly unsatisfactory earnings opportunities for beef at home and abroad, the price peak could have been reached. – In the coming week, the prices for young bulls should at best maintain the level of the previous week, and in some cases slight declines cannot be ruled out. In the case of slaughter cows, the slaughterhouses are probably no longer willing to pay surcharges again. – Veal was rated higher again than in the previous week. When the market situation was balanced, little changed in the prices for slaughter calves. Animals billed at a flat rate brought in around 4,36 euros per kilogram, which would be 34 cents more than in the previous year. – The range of livestock calves was not too large and could be placed without any problems. The prices mostly remained unchanged, regionally they strengthened slightly.

High pressure inactivation of Clostridium botulinum spores

Source: J Food Protection 66 (2003), 1402-1407.

The application of high hydrostatic pressures to increase the microbial safety of food is of great technological interest. While the vegetative bacteria can usually be killed well by the high pressures, the resistance of the terminal spores to the pressure still poses a problem.

Determination of fatty acids and iodine number in subcutaneous fat using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)

Source: 49thICOMST – Brazil 31st August – 05th September, 157-158.

Pork subcutaneous fat is still an indispensable raw material for the production of most sausages; its quality should meet differentiated requirements. In particular for the production of high-quality long-life products, bacon with a firm consistency and high oxidation stability is required. However, these properties require a corresponding fatty acid pattern. It is not only the proportion of saturated fatty acids (SFA), proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that is important. Even more important is the specification within these fatty acid groups. Fundamental importance is now attached to PUFA for fat quality. The quantitatively most important representatives are linoleic and linolenic acid.
