Slaughter weights of the calves increased

Cattle and pigs a little easier

In Germany, the cattle delivered to the slaughterhouses weighed slightly less in the first half of the current year than in the same period last year. According to official information, the average weight of the commercially slaughtered cattle of all categories was 327,5 kilograms, which was 600 grams less than from January to June 2003.

Pig farmers also brought their animals to the slaughterhouses a little lighter: On average across all classes, pigs weighed 2004 kilograms in the first half of 93,8, 300 grams less than a year earlier. This has halted the recently observed trend towards heavier animals, at least for the time being.

Founding congress of the "Platform Nutrition and Exercise eV"

In balance – for a healthy life!

On September 29, 2004, around 1000 participants from all over Germany attended the one-day founding congress of the “Nutrition and Exercise Platform” association in Berlin. The congress marks the start of concerted work to prevent and combat obesity in children and young people in Germany. "The necessary persuasiveness and dynamism to bring about long-term change can only be achieved through the cooperation of many actors who are committed together," said Prof. Dr. medical Erik Harms, chairman of the platform's recently elected board of directors and president of the German Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The eight founding members - the Federal Government, the food industry, the German Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the CMA Centrale Marketing-Gesellschaft der Deutschen Agrarwirtschaft mbH, the Union Food-Genuss-Gaststätten, the German Sports Association / German Sports Youth, the Federal Parents' Council and the umbrella organizations of the Statutory health insurance companies - presented their programs. The founding program is entitled "In balance - for a healthy life". Diverse fields of action are now waiting for the association: In addition to the documentation and evaluation of the international and national status on the causes and prevention of obesity, criteria for “good practice” in preventive measures are to be published in the near future based on these findings. The transfer of this knowledge and the factual information of the public are the further steps on the way to a new consciousness in the population.

As a founding member, the CMA welcomes the fact that actors with very different backgrounds are pulling together via the "Nutrition and Exercise Platform". "With the best professional practice and high legal standards, German farmers produce high-quality raw materials for a wide range of different foods. While the quality of these products is still in their own hands, the decision as to when, how and how often they are consumed is ultimately in someone else's hands - in the hands of the consumer," explained Dr. Andrea Dittrich, head of the CMA Science PR department and member of the association's extended board, at the joint presentation of the platform.

Fewer Iberian pigs for the first time in 2004?

Pace of growth noticeably slowed in Spain

The growth of the pig industry in Spain is likely to slow down noticeably in the coming years, after strong annual growth of between four and five percent was recorded in the 90s. This was pointed out by the leading Spanish meat producer Primayor Foods. For 2004, a decline of around three percent is assumed. Spain is the second largest pork producer in the European Union after Germany.

However, the Spanish processing industry should develop better in the next five years than in most other EU countries. Production growth in Central Europe is unlikely to exceed the expected increase in consumption, while in Great Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands the reduction in capacity is likely to slow down over the next few years.

Russia's poultry production is expanding

Industry with growing capacities

The Russian poultry industry is on the verge of a strong upswing. Because meat consumption in Russia follows the global trend – more and more poultry meat is being consumed. About half of domestic demand is still covered by imports, but according to the Federal Office for Foreign Trade Information, BfAI, the domestic economy is continuously catching up. According to estimates by Russian experts, the import quota could drop to around 20 percent in the next six years. The industry is investing, the prospects for suppliers of equipment for poultry farming and meat processing are improving.

While the beef and pork producers and their processors are complaining about massive problems, the poultry industry has been on the upswing for years. The domestic production of poultry meat rose from 766.000 tons (carcass weight) in 2000 to 1,04 million tons in 2003. Russian poultry experts are also optimistic about the future: for 2004 a production of 1,2 million tons is expected. In 2007 it could be around 1,8 million tons and in 2010 even 2,3 million tons. A large and growing portion of this -- about 70 to 80 percent -- will come from large industrial farms.

Consumers in Germany: bought more beef in 2004

Sales of pork fell compared to the previous year - butcher shops with a 20% market share had little "pig"

In the first eight months of this year, German consumers made a turn when buying meat: while they bought around 440.000 tonnes of pork, six percent less than a year ago, they bought more beef and poultry. Because compared to the hot summer of 2003, the mixed weather this summer rarely invited people to barbecue, and typical barbecue items such as pork steaks were less in demand.

According to market research data from ZMP and CMA based on the GfK household panel, purchases of beef increased by almost seven percent to almost 110.000 tons; The local shops sold a good 230.000 tons of poultry meat, almost three percent more than in the first eight months of 2003.

Demand for organically produced food

Demand for organic food - New study on the organic sector published

Strategies are based on facts and forecasts. This also applies to the organic sector. In the search for this, one comes across primarily primary data on areas, livestock and farms of organic farming. As the marketing chain moves away from the producer and towards the consumer, reliable information becomes scarce. The CMA Centrale Marketing-Gesellschaft der Deutschen Agrarwirtschaft mbH and the ZMP Central Market and Price Report Office GmbH are now closing this gap with their new study “Demand Structures for Organic Food in Germany”.

For the first time, the study with the enclosed CD-Rom starts with consumers and their consumption behavior. By observing a representative number of households, it is examined how often ecological products are bought, in what quantities, at what price and at which point of purchase. Among other things, the study clearly shows that purchasing behavior with regard to organic food varies greatly from region to region – the demand for organic products is significantly greater in southern Germany than in northern Germany.
