The award itself dates back to 1883, since then numerous people who have made outstanding contributions to the spread of French food culture have received this honour. However, it is still a rarity for the medal associated with elevation to the rank of chevalier to be awarded to a person outside of France.

He criticized the fact that the food industry is increasingly becoming the target of one-sided criticism, which sometimes culminates in the blanket accusation that it is "poisoning, lying and cheating": "The absurdity of such a claim is clear: the food industry lives from trust and consumer satisfaction. That is why consumer protection is our top priority. " As a further focus of his work as BLL President, Dr. Wolf carried out the evaluation of the Consumer Information Act (VIG) and, at European level, the Food Information Regulation. At VIG, it is important to find an appropriate balance between the interests of business and the interests of consumers. When it comes to the upcoming mandatory nutrition labeling, it is crucial that the EU Parliament follow the vote of the Environment Committee and finally resolve the misleading and unscientific traffic light.
On top of that, he is a consultant for large kitchens and caterers who are familiar with the subject of Halal. The company Höhenrainer Delikatessen is now guaranteeing compliance with Islamic requirements with a Halal seal.
Professional competence, foresight, a keen sense of strategic course setting and consistent action characterize Prof. Stiebing. He has been contributing his great knowledge and ability to the work of the DLG in an exemplary manner for around 35 years. The strategic further development of the DLG in the food sector, the development of quality tests, the expansion of methodological competence for sensory quality tests of food and the accelerated international orientation of the DLG test center are particularly important to him.
